Hugh founded Punch Group and was Executive Chairman of Punch Group between 1997 and 2001 during which time he built it into one of the UK's largest pub companies. He previously co-led the acquisition and market listing of PizzaExpress in 1993 and helped build it into the UK's largest sit-down restaurant chain
